Frequently Asked Questions 

If I’m in a shared room, where can I put my bags?

For each guest in dorm rooms, we provide a locker underneath the bed. They are fairly large, around 3’x 3’x18”. It can easily hold a large checked bag. You can bring your own padlock or buy one at the desk for $7.

Are towels included in the room?

Towels are only included for guests in our private rooms. Guests staying in one of our dorm rooms can rent a towel at the front desk for $1 per towel. We have a $6 minimum on any card transactions at the front desk, you can either ask for a towel during your check-in or bring cash.

How many beds are in the dorm rooms?

Each dorm room has between 4 - 8 beds. When booking a mixed dorm you will have the option of selecting either a 4 - 6 bed dorms or an 8 bed dorm. All of our female dorms have 4 beds.

What’s the bathroom situation like?

While we do not provide ensuite bathrooms, each bathroom is single occupancy. So once you close the door, you have your own toilet, shower, and sink. We have 10 bathrooms ranging in size throughout the hostel.

Do I need to be a foreigner to stay?

Every guest must currently reside outside of the Bay Area or show proof of onward travel. If you are a Bay Area resident, we would be happy to give you recommendations of other places to stay in city.

Is a reservation necessary? 

We recommend that you make a reservation since we do tend to book up, especially in the spring, summer, and early fall. However, you can always just walk in and see if we have space.

 Is there an age limit to stay at your hostel?

To stay in a dorm room, you need to be over 18 years old. If not, you can stay in a private room with a parent or guardian. We do not allow anybody under 18 to stay without one. There is no age limit and we host people of all ages. Our median age is 20 - 30 years old and we definitely do have a younger vibe, but anybody over 18 is welcome.

Do I need to bring my own linens?

 
Nope! We provide all of your bedding. We actually do not allow any personal bedding or camping equipment up to your room. This includes blankets, sheets, pillows, personal linens, sleeping bags, or camping mattresses. If you have these items, we will need to store it for free in our luggage storage area until you check out. Any outside bedding will not be allowed in the room - with the exception of bath towels.

How can I pay for my stay?

We do not take any prepayments unless your group is 5+ people. If you have 5 or more guests you will need to contact our group coordinator at groups@greentortoisesf.com to reserve your booking. You will pay for the full stay when you arrive. We accept cash, Visa, or MasterCard.

What time is check-in and check-out?

Check-in is officially at 4:00 PM, however if you arrive earlier we can store your bags for free. You can check-out anytime before 11 AM and we offer a 2 PM late check-out for an additional $20. You are welcome to store your luggage in our luggage room and use our hostel facilities until 8:00 PM on the day that you check-out.

How many nights can I stay here?

We allow guests to stay a maximum of 14 nights. Depending on the time of year, you may extend your stay beyond 14 nights with the approval of a manager. you will need to apply for our extended stay policy here on our website

Can I bring my own food?

Absolutely! We ask that you consume all food and drinks in our kitchen and common areas instead of your room to help us keep them clean and pest-free. We have a fully equipped kitchen and guest fridges for you to store any food and drinks. There are pens, markers, and labels in the kitchen to mark your items.
